Prayers for Mere Today - UPDATED

$

UPDATE: Mere's surgery went well, according to the doctor, and they were able to remove the cyst and ovary (with a bit of work). He said there was NO cancer (yay!) but recovery will be painful. We're staying the night at the hospital tonight and hopefully she'll feel much better tomorrow.

Hey everybody!

I have a super quick favor to ask...
Last week, Mere felt like she was passing a kidney stone (after passing a number of them over the past 18 months, I took her at her word). After a visit to the ER, some tests and scans, it turns out that her remaining ovary (she had a partial hysterectomy last August) has a "grapefruit-sized cyst" on it. They recommended that she have surgery right away to remove it. They say it might be cancer, and so they're treating it as such.

I'd love for you to:
1) pray that the surgery goes well.
2) pray that there's no cancer, or that it is all removed.
3) pray that Mere recovers quickly so she can get back home to her Cece.

Mere wasn't sure she wanted me to blog about this but we decided together that the more people who know, the more people might pray!

Hey everybody!

Today we are featuring Bo Senesomxay (sin-some-sigh) on the blog! Bo is one of NWA's hottest and most talented hair stylists/makeup artists. His work has been in Glamour and other national magazines, and you can find him at Dead Swanky in Fayetteville. Also, he is one of the most warm and welcoming people I have ever met.

We interviewed Bo for the second issue of Benfield Weddings Magazine, especially since he works with so many of our Benny Brides! In the feature you will find some fabulous beauty advice, and a glimpse of what it is like working with Bo on your wedding day. Go pick up a copy of the Benfield Weddings Magazine today to read more about Bo!! gum.co/benny2

Alex had Bo do her hair and makeup for her fall engagement photos. Such a stunner!

Caroline is naturally beautiful, but Bo made her look like a super star for her senior photos!

Crown Beauty Bar in Fayetteville: One Stop Pampering Shop!

Hey everybody!

I've noticed a trend: the more talented a person is at his/her job, the more fun he/she seems to have. This is definitely true in my case, and it is definitely true with the team at Crown Beauty Bar in Fayetteville. My time there was pretty much spent laughing and having a good time, with a camera in hand. Many of the staff I've known for awhile, and some I've even worked on with Benny shoots... they really are fabulous and fun to work with. Now, if I could only get an appointment for a hot stone massage, I could give a really accurate review of their services... haha!

Ellie a Masterchef Jr?

Hey everybody!

This kid never ceases to amaze me. A while back, we posted this kids cooking video of her on youtube and it got all sorts of hits. Well, the casting team at Masterchef Jr contacted me via phone and email to say they loved the video and thought Ellie would be great for the show.

My response: so... she'd get to meet Gordon Ramsay?
Haha! My priorities!

As excited as she was (and she was WAY excited), after we filmed a new video that was a little more advanced (the plating of which I've included below - the full video had her cooking and confessional portions), she decided not to compete in the kids' cooking competition. Is she crazy?

No, she's mature. She had been working to make the competition dance team at her studio, and this year she got selected to prepare a duet, and would have to miss her competitions. She knew it wouldn't be fair to her partner that she committed to, and wanted to follow through on her dream. Again, this kid constantly amazes me. Oh, I love her so, and don't know if I could ever be more proud of her for making such a mature decision.

Images from Napa Valley

Hey everybody!

If you follow Mere or me on Instagram, you know we just returned from a relaxing trip to Napa Valley for Valentine's Day. If you don't follow us, what are you waiting for? ;)

While Mere was getting her Valentine's Day massage as my little treat to her, I ran out and shot some images (my treat to myself - after all these years, I still honestly LOVE to shoot!). I played around with some film settings and love the final product of these images:

This shot is of the door leading into The French Laundry (my most favorite restaurant in the entire world, by my favorite chef in the entire world). From a photographer standpoint, notice the detail that is brought out even in the shadow areas of the image...

This is Thomas Keller's garden, across the street from The French Laundry. I'm a sucker for fog, and love looking off into the distance here.

This shot's a little more dramatic. This vineyard was right outside Yountville. Again with the fog, I purposely underexposed this image for a cool effect. :)

This shot is so simple, but it's toning and texture is insane. I could stare at this one forever. I shot this outside the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone (a VERY cool locale, y'all!).

I started shooting more than 15 years ago, and still love photographing more than anything... and I feel so fortunate that photography is not only my job, but my deepest and oldest passion.  Thanks for checking in! I appreciate you!

Hey everybody!

Bree, Kaley, and Tyler make a SWEET, sweet family! Ever since their family session, where Kaley sang "Bringing home my baby bumblebee" Mere has been singing it nonstop to Cece. Not only does it make our baby girl smile, but it makes Bree smile too!  And what a sweet smile it is!

How precious is this moment?!

Kaley and Tyler are engaged to be married, so I shot a few of the two them as well. Oooooh, gorgeous!

Hey everybody!

What exciting news! Our friend and Benny Bride, Lindsey Stavely (here's her wedding details, her wedding story, and her wedding portraits), the only with amazing style (her NYC bridal portraits here), has opened up a gOrGeOuS bridal boutique here in Fayetteville! Yay! Tesori has transformed into a fabulous bridal shop, and I got a little sneak peek before the big opening. It didn't disappoint! The look, feel, and style of the shop is SO Lindsey (aka: amazing and beautiful). If you're a Benny Bride you MUST go take a look!

I did a more in-depth write up and pictures of Tesori in the latest issue (#2) of Benfield Weddings Magazine. Get yours here!

Here's a trip down memory lane with Lindsey...

SO, so proud of my Benny Bride friend!

Go Team USA! Olympic Hopeful Cece Benfield ;)

Hey everybody!

Anyone else sad the olympics are over? We sure are! We spent a lot of time watching the sames from Sochi this year and, as always, loved seeing all the remarkable back stories. Ellie and I would camp out on the couch and watch all night - totally fun bonding! Cece got a huge kick out of the bobsled (she'd laugh big time every time the camera would show a bobsled coming straight for the camera). The rest of the time, she watched the Yo Gabba Gabba episode about the Olympics, so she was still involved.

As closing ceremonies hit, Mere thought we should do a fun olympic-themed shoot of Baby Cece. We already had everything but the headband, and thought since she loves to bounce and jump more than anything in the world, she could be a trampoline star. Heehee! Cute, right?

Hey everybody!

Such a sweet couple, Kori and John! I felt a total connection with them during their engagement session yesterday here in Fayetteville. They made the trip up from Hot Springs, where their summer wedding will be, and we just had such a fun time trekking around town shooting. Sure, it got a little cold, but they were good snugglers so it didn't matter! Look how totally adorable this couple is!

Um, hello GORGEOUS!!!

Hey everybody!

I love Instagram because of the connections I get to make with people. One of the coolest Fayettevillians I've met is Jen Lewis, owner of Cooking Fresh. She and I sat down recently over coffee and decided to co-host a cooking class (something she does on the regular) and I couldn't be more excited!

We're doing a beer and food pairing! What's better than that?!

If you're interested, there are still a couple spots left (it just opened up 2 hours ago!): email Jen at jandjlewis@aol.com to claim your spot! It's 75 dollars for the class on March 12 at 6:30 (perfect for St. Patty's Day!) Hope you can be there! Baller Foodtruck will be!

Hey everybody!

We just had too many good engagements of Kori and John for one post. So let's do another!
It's so fun when I can just say to a couple... "hey, why don't y'all just sit there and cuddle up," and I get perfect and adorable stuff like this:

Happy happy happy! That's what they are! Sure it makes my job easy, but it also reminds me why I chose to be a wedding photographer. Infectious love is my absolute favorite!

1st Place Finish for Ellie!

Hey everybody!

Ellie enjoyed her first dance competition this weekend. I, on the other hand, was a nervous wreck. I remember back to the days when I had piano recitals and would always have to go last or 2nd to last, so I'd have to sit through the other 20 or so students walk up and play their song. Well, Ellie was number two hundred and something so I sat through a LOOOOOT of other performances before she was called backstage. (and then the nerves REALLY set it!)

I was so relieved... Mere even cried... when Ellie performed the dance the best we'd seen it, and never had a moment of uncertainty. She nailed her jumps and remembered her facial expressions, as you'll see below. We were all so thrilled with her performance!

And so were the judges! Ellie got 1st place for the performance!! She's been such a hard worker over the past few years and has been very dedicated (as you know from this post) and once again she has made her parents SO proud. What an amazing little lady!

(fyi... I didn't take these shots... don't hold them against me... we weren't allowed to bring my camera in so Whitney (Ellie's mom) shelled out 80 bucks for these)

Hey everybody!

Every year I get the nod to photograph this family, which I've watched grow from a couple with a sweet pregnant belly to the one you see below. Marshall enjoys photography himself (he came to a Shoot Your Kids workshop!), and I've just grown to adore the entire family! Here's their latest session with us!

WPPI 2014 Recap

$

Hey everybody!

While you all were figuring out how to deal with the crazy weather, I was off to Las Vegas for WPPI (ouch, right?!). The annual convention and tradeshow for wedding photographers is always such a blast because of the time we get to spend with our industry friends.  I spent, once again, all my time with my photo bff JP Elario (center, below), and a lot of good quality time with my friends from dropitModern (the dude on the right below is JP's dad, Joe... such a cool dad!)

I also once again helped JP with his platform class #marketingswagger - a packed room!

We also took a tour of Zappos - one of the coolest places to work in the world! It was super informative and totally fun! (I'm a huge Zappos nerd, if you remember from my book review of Delivering Happiness, by Tony Hsieh)

And as always, Vegas is synonymous with good food for me! Here are some collages I put up on Instagram of my foodie travels from this Vegas trip:
Javier's was insanely good Mexican food (and Mexican isn't my favorite). I had a great time with my friends from Miller's Lab, and always feel so honored to be treated to dinner!

Per Mere's recommendation we ate at Todd English P.U.B. I was on a lobster kick this trip, and Todd English had a mean lobster roll, but the REAL treat was the junk chips!

The meal I was most looking forward to: Sage at Aria has some really unique items: Foie gras custard brulee, foie gras ice cream, etc. I tried and I loved!

One of my very favorite restaurants is Holsteins (it's not crazy expensive, and has super approachable food). Below you'll see fried bacon (yep!), lobster roll, asian sliders, ahi poke, and cuban street tacos. They also serve adult shakes, but I didn't want to waste stomach space.

All in all, it was a fun trip, but since Mere had to cancel her ticket and keep Cece home, I found myself thinking about home a lot. Now that I'm back home (to snow and cold), I am a happy guy!
