Jana and Shelby's Engagement Session

Hey everybody!

If I could sum up Jana in one word it would be: super-sweet-southern-belle - that's one word, right? If I could sum up Shelby in one word it would be: HILARIOUS. He made the shoot SO fun (and we already have fun on shoots!). Seriously, I was laughing the whole time.
Jana had some really fun ideas for their shoot (the marquee letters that spell "love," for example) and I loved that they played an active role in planning their session. Here are some of my favorites...

Cece on FILM

Hey everybody!

Did you know that when I started photography in 1998, digital cameras weren't around? We shot everything on film so it was a whole different ballgame. No looking at the back of the camera, no changing ISOs from shot to shot, and it wasn't easy to make copies of negatives.

I still have my film camera that I used to photograph weddings and portraits sessions, and decided to dust it off and play around with it. I photographed cc as well as a couple sessions, and I remembered how much I loved the look and feel of shooting with film.

Here are some from the session I did with Cece.

Hey everybody!

Ellie LOOOOOVES to plan outfits for her and Cece to wear. One day, Ellie decided to put on a mega fashion show, pulling 10 or 12 looks from their closets. It was a nice day out, so I made our sidewalk be the runway - Cece loves going outside (and HATES going back inside), so it was a crazy and fun time!  Here are a couple of the shots I got from the runway show (I had them sit for a couple).

Hey everybody!

Aren't newborn babies just the SWEETEST?! I could cuddle and snuggle with them all day long! We've done a lot more of these lately and I've kinda liked it! Little Eva has the sweetest lips! It seemed like any pose we put her in she was showing off her perfect pout!

Sporting her great-grandmother's pearls!!! Such a classy little lady!

She woke up for one single image!

Love this little content smile!

Hey everybody!

Mere recently photographed her nieces - they're all three sweet as pie! Caroline (the oldest) is crazy talented musically; Margaret is sassy, hilarious, and super outgoing; Lucy is a sweet little snuggler. I get to be "crazy uncle Dale" when they're around (which is often since they live in our neighborhood), and it's a job I hold in the highest regard. :)

Hey everybody!

It seems that my entire Facebook feed consists of engagement announcements. It's definitely that time of year! If you know a bride-to-be who just got a ring, it's your friend-duty to let her know that she's got to move quickly in the next week or two to get all her non-negotiables (photographer, venue, etc) before other brides snag them up! We've only get 8 dates available for 2015 brides, and I suspect that number will go down pretty quickly over the next couple weeks!

My Terrible Christmas Eve, and What Made It Better

$

Hey everybody!

I was in a pretty terrible mood yesterday. I don't get in them too often... at least ones that last all day. I spent a lot of time in the car driving, which is not the way I like to spend holidays. Then, Mere and I seemed to be on different pages, with different rhythms. We sometimes get out of sync and when we're off, nothing is right. When we got to my parents' house in Joplin, it was a whirlwind: people everywhere, Cece acting crazy, and we couldn't stay as long as I would have liked. My sister, who I haven't seen in a couple years, was there and I barely got to hang out with her. It was one of those days where I just wanted to hit the Pause button. Or better yet, the Reset button. On the drive home it was more of the same... I didn't know we were expected back so early for Mere's family Christmas at our house (they were already inside when we got home), and we argued more on the drive back. I'm sure I was noticeably upset by the time we got home, but I was in the kitchen finishing my soup for the family so I don't think it showed.

Get the idea?

Then something changed. Since Mere's parents live in Fayetteville now, we didn't have their annual Christmas Eve program at church to attend, and sing/perform in... a tradition of mine and Mere's. In fact, we couldn't find a late night service at any local church. I think the entire family felt a little off about that. Over the years, we've made it a special time to spend with Jesus before going to bed Christmas Eve.

After opening presents, then eating soup, we spent time together first reading the story of Christmas from the bible, then by singing Christmas Carols. My talented niece and I took turns on the piano as our family sang about a dozen Christmas songs. After that, the kids got the idea to go caroling in our neighborhood - I grabbed my guitar and off we went... my mood was a million percent better, and I couldn't wait to share the spirit of Christmas... no wait... the spirit of Christ... with my neighbors.

Though we didn't go to church on Christmas Eve for the first time in forever, this verse popped into my head:
Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst."

Happy birthday, Jesus. Thank you for spending your birthday with us.

Merry Christmas, y'all!
Dale

Apparently Mere snagged a picture last night and IG'd it (I was at the piano for this one, so I'm not in it)

Sarah and William's Wedding Portraits

Hey everybody!

I don't typically start weddings out with portraits (maybe I should!), but today I just thought it was the perfect way to introduce Sarah and William to you. They are both so kind, and definitely photogenic. Sarah worked with us to plan the timing of her day - which in December and January are very important - we had lots of light to work with for her wedding portraits.

I played around a little with some glass (from the hanging lanterns outside her parents' house) and just LOVE this shot!

They really are this sweet.

I can't wait to share their first meeting with y'all... it was on this amazing bridge in Little Rock.

Gorgeous light and color for this next one. Ahhhhh!

Sarah's dad had made a note about the mountain near their house, so we made sure to surprise him with a portrait that had the mountain in the background. Aren't we sneaky?! :)

Another through-the-glass shot - Gah! I love it so much!!

Tomorrow I'm going to share Sarah's AMAZING (truly!) winter wonderland white wedding details! Be sure to come back and check that out!

Hey everybody!

It was the very definition of a winter wonderland for Sarah and William's wedding. The snowy trees and white fur was everywhere, and the Pleasant Valley Country Club was transformed into such a beautiful and festive place (props to Rachel Haynes Events!).

I just adored Sarah's shoes. Simply beautiful!

These winter centerpieces were a DREAM!

I loved the modern touch of this fabulous cake.

Great drinks for grownups and kids alike. SO fun and festive!

I die. Isn't this detail GORGEOUS?!

A close up of the gorgeous white winter centerpiece...

Isn't that a fun mood setter? I can't wait to show you my favorite moments and portraits from Sarah's winter wedding!

Sarah and William's Little Rock Wedding Ceremony

Hey everybody!

Sarah and William had a truly SWEET wedding! The day was filled with laughing and enjoying her (very large) wedding party. I think that's great because there was absolutely no stress due to the fact that so much down time (aka relaxation time!) was built into the schedule for the day - and as always we were ahead of schedule!

Sarah's mom had the idea the two should have their first meeting on the old bridge near their house, and I thought it was fantastic! Here's my shot...

And here's Rachel's shot, who stood on the "new bridge" a hundred yards or so away. Isn't this dreamy?

Remember that big wedding party I mentioned earlier? Here's proof. Our largest yet!  I think this picture is fantastic!

Before the ceremony, the pastor came in to pray with the wedding party and family. I love this moment between Sarah and her mother. VERY sweet indeed.

Ha... Sarah's dad is one of my all-time favorites. He's helpful, personable, and silly! I love this moment too!

But this... y'all... this is my favorite moment. You know me and daddy/daughter stuff. This one really gets me. I shot through the side of a lit Christmas tree to get that pretty color and light orbs on the right. LOVE.

This winter wedding was decorated with gorgeous Christmas trees - even the church had them.

First kiss as husband and wife. Look at the smiles on the wedding party's faces.

The super fun reception is heading your way tomorrow!

We had SUCH a blast at their GORGEOUS reception... All white errythang?! YES, PLEASE! The band was a so talented and there was so much dancing! These people definitely know how to get down!

Sarah's mom, y'all.... She's so sweet/fun/loving and on top of that - a great dancer!

Then they did their Kappa song - so sweet, y'all!! What precious friends!

This guy.

Selfie with my sweet couple before their grand exit...

And what's better than a SNOWBALL exit!? (They were actually little white poms - so cute!) Such a perfect ending to this winter wonderland wedding!

2014 Year in Review, Part One

$

Hey everybody!

Tomorrow marks 6 years since I made the commitment to blog EVERY SINGLE DAY, without taking a day off. This was more than a commitment just to press "publish" each day; really it was a commitment that I was going to share my life with y'all and invite you in to my little world every single day. It had an amazing result: we started getting more and more of y'all coming back every day. That gift on your part is something I cherish.  Thank you!

Today I'm doing my annual year in review; this year I'm going to call it the year of travel! We did SO much of it this year. We experienced some new places, and revisited some of our favorites.

We started the year off right, photographing Kirsten's proposal in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Finally got to photograph a wedding in Savannah:
wedding at Forsyth Park in Savannah, GA

We got to go back to our favorite place on earth, to shoot a wedding at Excellence Playa Mujeres:

And shot another wedding at Latrobes in New Orleans, one of my favorite destinations:
wedding at Latrobe's in New Orleans

And shot a wedding at Meadowood Napa - maybe my new favorite wedding destination:

Photographed an amazing wedding at L'Auberge Del Mar near San Diego... outdoors at night!

I published TWO issues of Benfield Weddings Magazine:

and was featured in a couple other magazines:
Bridal Beauty Magazine

Featured in the The Knot magazine by Wedding Paper Divas:

and here on Zenfolio, giving tips to help photographers with their workflow and storage:

And for some crazy awesome reason, I shot a TON of gorgeous senior portraits, who were all so fun and fabulous!!

Taking selfies along the way!

It's been a super fun year. I know this looked pretty glamorous (don't get me wrong, it was fun!), but nothing beats the daily grind of getting up checking email destroying to-do lists, shooting every day, and blogging every night. :) I hope for more of the same in 2015!
