Sunday Super Thoughts: Character is...

Hey everybody,
I've been thinking about doing a quote day on the blog - I mean, I LOVE quotes and when I taught English in high school I had a quote of the day every single day - so I've decided to go for it.
To kick things off, I wanted to post a quote from Emerson (Ralpho Waldo Emerson is one of my very favorites!): "Character is Higher than Intellect."

Today I'm going to talk a little bit about the quote. In literature, I always feel like every word is meant to count. In this case, I could break it down to the two most important words: "Character" as in "what you do when nobody is looking" and "Higher." I want to note that Emerson doesn't say, "better" or "more important." He says "Higher." Closer to God? That's what I want to think! This is encouraging because most people seem to value intelligence, and less emphasis is normally placed on character. I think God cares less about what you know and more about who you are.
For years I worked as a YoungLife leader (and student staff) in Joplin. Did you know that? My mentor, Greg, always told me (I know he didn't make this up, but he always said it and I always loved it): God is more concerned with your character than your comfort. God values character. And I'm thankful for that, because I don't know everything. :)
Talk to you soon,
Dale
