Custom Jewelry and Wedding Tips, by Guest Blogger: Sarah

Hi there!

My name is Sarah, and I live with my husband Grant in Dallas. In addition to our day jobs, we have a custom jewelry business called Sarabella. I design and create the pieces and Grant is the CEEO (Chief-Everything-Else-Officer). When Lauren asked me to write a guest post for the Benfield Blog, I was completely blown away! We had such a wonderful experience working with her, Jessica, Dale, and Meredith, that I was thrilled for the chance to give something back.

Since it is my most passionate passion, I thought it would be fun to write about jewelry and some tips
on how to style it for your wedding. First, though, a little history. Whether it was fifteen Mardi Gras
bead necklaces with my church dress (yep, I was that little girl), making flower necklaces at my brothers’ baseball games, or giving hand-woven friendship bracelets to all my best friends – for as long as I can remember, I have been making and styling jewelry. During college, I even started a business and sold pieces in shops all around Texas and Arkansas. After I graduated though, I became very engrossed in my oh-my-gosh-this-is-real-life job, and my little flame for jewelry making went out for a bit (don’t worry, it came back!).

When it was time to plan our wedding, my husband and I wanted to look back at our beautiful Benfield album and see a reflection our everyday selves. This was especially true when it came to the jewelry I was going to wear. I told Grant that I did not want to see pictures of my bride-self later and ask “Who is that girl?” or say “I want to be her!” To be true to me meant adding a little (OK…A LOT!) of jewelry. On my wedding day, I remember my grandmother pulling me aside for a pep talk saying, “OK, Sarah, let’s not overdo it on the bracelets today.”

The following were the style guidelines I used for my wedding jewelry:

1. Incorporate Pieces That Have Sentimental Value

I wore a ring that my grandmother had made for my mom when she graduated high school. I also
wore two bracelets: one from my mom and one from my stepmother. The ring was on loan from
my mom’s collection (covet!), but the bracelets were items that I wear often.

2. Find Some Pretty Things That Match Your Wedding Style

Our wedding style was art-deco/art-nouveau with some old world touches. I thought these earrings
from Stella and Dot and this J Crew bracelet fit right in!

3. Work In One Special Tiny Detail Piece That Only You Know About

Years ago my Grandmother gave me a ladybug pin that was my great-grandmother’s. She wore it on
her cuff as a style accessory. I have always had it as a treasure in my jewelry box, so I pinned it into
my bouquet as a fun little detail that only I (and the hyper -observant) would notice.

4. You Can’t Beat Custom

While I did not design or create any pieces for our wedding, it was not without a custom touch. My
aunt is a jewelry designer who lives in Chicago. Her gift to me was to create custom pieces for all my
bridesmaids. She asked the girls questions about their personal style and inspiration and based on
their responses, she was able to create pieces that were a perfect fit for each of my ladies while still
holding true to a consistent collection theme and our wedding style. It just doesn’t get any better
than that.

My best advice to all you brides-to-be: choose wisely when it comes to accessories. Try to incorporate some of your everyday jewelry, family heirlooms, as well as new pieces that represent your personal style so that when you stare in amazement at the beautiful details captured by the Benfield team, you can reflect on that day fully satisfied that you were true to yourself.

As Grant and I were looking back through our gorgeous photo album (which Lauren so perfectly put
together) and reflecting on all the creative projects we had worked on together for our wedding, I felt
a spark of inspiration that I hadn’t felt in several years. I had so much fun styling jewelry, and I was so impressed with the custom pieces that my aunt created that I knew it was time to start up my jewelry business again (yay!). Through our wedding, I discovered the style foundation that was perfect for the re-launch of Sarabella: a perfect combination of antique or vintage elements with modern design. Our focus is to work to get to know our clients and then design and/or style pieces that best represent who they are. We would be thrilled to work with you or with your whole wedding party to design an affordable collection that will add yet another personal touch to your big day. Here’s a quick look at some of the pieces we have created!

I want to take one more chance to thank Lauren, Jessica, Dale, and Meredith for everything they were
able to do for us. We put our memories in their skilled hands, and they exceeded every expectation!

xo,
Sarah

Andrew's Proposal to Andrea at Theo's Restaurant!

Hey everybody!

How fun is this post?!! Andrea and I go way back. That is, we've never met until Saturday night... but we both feel like we already know each other! Through emails and blogs and this and that, it's as if we're long time friends! So, when Andrew emailed me to say he was proposing, I got super excited! Lauren and I had to set up a big covert operation (because Andrea would spot me a mile away and the surprise would be ruined for sure). So, we hit up the silly ladies at the Beauty Mart on Wedington and found me an amazing wig. Sexy, right? haha! Check it out...

But the disguise worked... look at her reaction! LOOOOOVE!!!!

I had to take them outside for a quick pic!

Congratulations, Andrea (and Andrew)!!! I'm so happy for you, and I can't wait to get started on this wedding!!!!

Talk to you soon,
Dale

Sunday Superthoughts: Calling Off Today

Hey everybody!

I've forgotten how FUN it was being a Dada to a newborn (Ellie is EIGHT, believe it or not, so it's been awhile since newborn noises filled our house!)

I'm finding that having sweet little Cece around is SO fun. I'm thankful that she is such a good baby, as Ellie was, and I'm spending a lot of time just enjoying her company... her funny faces, her silly sounds, and our tummy-to-tummy time.

Because I love snuggling with my beh-beh like cray-cray, I'm thankful for the wedding break we've scheduled off for ourselves. Don't get me wrong, I LOOOVE photographing weddings, but I know I'd regret all this cuddle time with Cutie if I scheduled weddings in January and February.

So, forgive me if I take a few extra hours getting back to emails (I still get back to you before I head to bed)... I'm busy calling off the day to be with my precious girl!

Hey everybody!

In all my excitement over Brittany's wedding earlier this week I forgot to post my favorite bridal portraits! We typically shoot bridal portraits 5-6 weeks before the wedding, and can schedule the location for wherever the bride wants (we even did one in NYC because a bride was a super fashionista!). Here are my favorites from Brittany's bridal session in Little Rock:

What Not to Wear {for engagement sessions}

$
0
0

Hi Everyone!

We constantly get clients who are nervous for their photo shoots. For the brides it is often because they can't figure out what to wear. A few days before the shoot we have our brides text us photos of what they and their future hubby will be wearing. We tell them to pick three outfits. We usually say go with one casual, one date night, and one a bit more dressy. Brides often put together more than three outfits and then let us choose. Which we are totally okay with! However, here's a few "What Not to Wear" suggestions for a bride that's panicking over what to wear!

1. Writing

For engagement shoots we are trying to capture you and your sweetheart of a fiance. We are not trying to make an ad for a clothing company or draw attention away from you two as a couple. So, try and stay away from blouses or t-shirts that have bold writing on them.

2. Too Many Neutrals

Neutrals can be gorgeous and can help make sure your clothes aren't stealing the show. Although, a pop of color can add an edgy or fun feel to the shoot. Be sure to switch up your outfits. If you have a fairly neutral outfit make sure the others have some color. This way you get a variety of shots and outfits.

3. Clothes That Don't Fit

The most gorgeous outfit can be completely ruined if it is a terrible fit. This goes for people of all sizes. Quick alterations can be inexpensive and be the perfect finishing touch for any outfit.

4. Too Much

Don't get me wrong we love fashion and new upcoming trends. That being said, remember not to over do it. Don't let your outfit be too distracting. Sometimes an outfit can be all people see when they look at your engagement photos. It's sometimes good to have one classic outfit. Trends fade and in twenty years when your kids look through your old photos you might not be so fond of the outfits you chose.

5. Clashing Colors

Having trouble figuring out which colors look best together? There are some awesome new pairings out there but it never hurts to go back to the basics and check a color wheel online. On a color wheel, complimentary colors are always directly across from each other. For example, yellow and violet or blue and orange.

6. Clothes That Aren't You

This one's pretty simple. Like I said earlier we are trying to capture you and your fiance. That means you personality not the personality of your mom who is pressuring you into wearing something or the personality of a model from Vogue in a crazy fashionista dress with a ton of make up. Fashion can be a great tool for self expression. So express away! But... don't be someone you aren't. The couples that look the best in their photos are the ones that are comfortable and confident. Who is comfortable and confident when they are pretending to be someone they aren't? We give you the casual, date night, and dressy ideas so that you can have a variety of photos. If you aren't one for dressing up or your most casual outfit consists of glitter and heels that's cool with us!

Talk to you later!

~ Lauren

We shot an image similar to this for a couple in 2007 (see it here) because both couples had their first date at Hugo's right off the Fayetteville square. I love this - so perfect!

Create + Give Givaway!! (Guest post by Meg Hulsey)

$

Hey all! It’s Meg here again with the keys to the wonderful Benfield Blog for a day, honored as always.

So, January rolled around this year as did resolutions, lists of things done, longer lists of to-dos and I really had to take a look at myself and ask: what are some basic things I can actively improve? No more general resolution statements like “eat healthy” without a follow up goal like “cut sour patch kids out of your diet” (this is only an example, I would never cut sour patch kids out of my diet). The two broad resolutions I set for myself were to create more and become more generous.

Now, if you know anything about me or have read the Benfield Blog for awhile (huge shout out to the constant support Dale and Mere give me) you know I operate a not-for-profit called Art Feeds. A quick rundown for those of you who don’t know is that Art Feeds exists to mobilize creative healing. We do this by giving free therapeutic art and creative education to over 2,600 children weekly, you can read more about it here. I had to take a look at myself in the 2013 year and realize that I’d become a bit of a hypocrite. Something we teach our students every day in Art Feeds is to continually create, move, mold, express and stir the stagnant. Although since I started Art Feeds 4 years ago my creativity has been used in the not-for-profit setting, it had been a long time since I created anything just for me--for the sake of simply making. So I decided to create more and pair this with the other half- become more generous. My continuous ambition is to do exactly what that last sentence says. The follow up goal to my broad resolutions was simple: create something and give it away. This has been revolutionary for me. Since January 1, I’ve been making at least one creation per day and giving it away on Instagram in what I call the #createandgive giveaway to a random “Liker” at @artfeedsmeg . No gimmicks. No hidden fees. It is what it is. I get the joy of making something and giving it away each day and a random Instagram user gets a surprise present. I don’t know how long this will last, but I’m having so much fun with the challenge now I don’t know when I’ll want to stop. Here are the #Createandgive giveaways to date:

One of my recent #createandgive giveaways was a sweet little apron I re-purposed out of my Wedding decorations. This apron was a play area for children in its (most recent) former life.
Transformed into this:

I’m going to give a tutorial on how to make your own. It would be a great little apron to wear for upcoming Valentine’s festivities- cooking for your husband (are you reading this husband of mine? Are you snorting with laughter?), baking with your girlfriends or even to finish off an outfit for aSecret Session (I 100% recommend you book one with Mere now!).

Materials Needed:
Vintage Lace Curtain (or any sort of fun lace or chiffon material)
Ribbon or Lace
Small Fabric Heart
Scissors
Thread
Needles
Fray Stop
Sewing Machine

Step 1: Carefully cut the curtain to desired length. I found this curtain at a garage sale and the detailed scalloped edge was the perfect length for an apron, if you are just working with material 16” is a good length. Use the fray stop to save the scalloped edges from fraying.

Step 2: Fold 1/4 “ seam around the perimeter of the apron and pin. Then run a seam straight line around the entire border with your sewing machine.

Step 3: Take your ribbon or lace and measure it around your own waist to be certain you have enough material. Create pleats in the apron fabric by folding it under itself and secure with pins. More pleats= more poof. Do whatever you feel comfortable with. Then carefully sew the apron to the ribbon or lace.

Step 4: Add any sort of embellishment you like. I chose a heart cut from vintage fabric. Some other ideas would be a vintage hankie or vintage dish rag. I placed the heart where I wanted it on the apron and used the sewing machine one last time, running a border around the heart. All done! What types of things will you be cooking in this? (I’m gonna be honest, I’d do what I do best in the kitchen, which is pour a bowl of Honey Crunch cereal with almond milk)

Enjoy!
Xxo meg

To follow along on my daily #createandgive giveaways follow @artfeedsmeg on Instagram. As a special gift to all the Benfield Photography Blog readers, I will give one random commenter this Sweetheart Apron! Just leave a comment below telling how you will use the apron if you win (comment by midnight tonight!!). Be sure you’re email is connected to the comment!
