Hey everybody!

Every now and then I like to look back at the calendar to see what I was doing this day last year, two years ago, three... And FIVE years ago I photographed Jennifer and Ben's wedding in the MORNING (they served brunch food at their morning reception). Such a fun wedding, with personal touches and lovely winter details. Here are a couple of my favorite portraits... I'm so happy for you, J+B!

Behind the Scenes (BTS) Saturday's Wedding

Hey everybody!

There are so many reasons I love my job. My unique clients, my talented vendor friends, and hello... I get to spend every Saturday at a WEDDING! I love weddings!  Saturday all those were true but I also had the best time with my co-workers.  :) Courtney and Madison (you've seen her on this blog before, and you will again!) were of course super helpful and servant-like for the bride, but they also kept me laughing all day long, and on the drive to Searcy and back. Thanks you two for making my job even more fun. :)

Alexis + Jarrod's Searcy Wedding

Hey everybody!

A day trip to Searcy to spend with Jarrod and Alexis was the perfect way to kick off the 2016 wedding season! I've always loved weddings, and even though I hear vows and see kisses and sweet things all year long, I never EVER lose sensitivity to these special moments. Jarrod and Alexis had so many of these special moments.  Y'all, they wrote their own vows and did a tremendous job - not lying... I cried.  They saved their first kiss for the wedding (which I wrote about a couple days ago), and they were both so emotional.  Today I'm sharing part one of the wedding with you - details and wedding ceremony.  Tomorrow, come back to see portraits and reception images!

She's a straight-up DOLL!

Alexis' vows. How special.

They didn't do a first look, but Alexis texted me a couple days before the wedding and said she'd like to have a special non-look moment.  Here's the sweetness...

Once again... the first kiss. LOVE.

Hey everybody!

Not having a first look can be difficult for photographers because there is no light for the couple's portraits. At A+J's wedding in Searcy, they didn't have a first look; however, with the help of ice lights (maybe a post on this coming soon!) and the dreamy hanging Christmas lights at the Harding University campus we were able to get some super fun portraits!

Icelight Review: My Secret Weapon

Hey everybody!

Eleven months ago I bought three ice lights for some projects I was working on. Since then I've started bringing them to pretty much every evening shoot, and lately I've been using them at weddings. If I had any complaints it would be that they could be brighter and I'd like the battery to last longer (isn't that the truth with anything though?), but that is literally it.  They've fallen out of my car about 20 times and still work great, they're dimmable, they're easy and fun to use, and the quality of light is gorgeous because of the built in diffuser. Here are some shots I've done with them over the past year...

Miller's + Mpix - Perfect Prints

$

Hey everybody!

It's been awhile since I've talked about printing pictures. Isn't that odd? I'm a photographer, after all, and printing pictures is my love language. I of course value the fact that I can pull out my phone and flip through images of my friends, my family, my work, etc., but NOTHING beats hanging a portrait on the wall, or framing your favorite moment. How many times have I had a rough day and walked through the door at home to see a big ol' print of Ellie smiling to brighten my day? Too many to count.

There's a tip in 5 Minute Fix about this so I won't go into a huge discussion here, but it's SO EASY to get professional quality prints from a real lab (try to avoid the bad quality prints at discount stores, y'all!). If you're not a professional photographer, use mpix.com for prints - the quality is great, the prices are great, and they're so fast! When I started my photo career, I used them exclusively to service my clients and have literally NEVER had to send back a print for bad printing. If you ARE a professional, I don't need to explain the importance of a great printing lab. For 100 percent of my print orders, canvas orders, Christmas Card orders, etc., I use Miller's Professional Imaging. They've been my go-to my entire career and will never leave them. The people there are so sweet (I've toured the lab many times), their operation is so efficient, and their quality is the best. You can easily spot a Miller's print in a sea of prints from lesser quality labs.

There's no code I need to give you... I receive no money for writing this post... I just value 1) the practice of getting prints for your home and 2) a quality lab.

Hey everybody!

I've got one of the coolest shoots to share with you. Lindsey from Tesori texted me a few weeks ago and said she wanted to shoot a bride with colored smoke - I'd played around with smoke bombs and photos before, but never a bride in a wedding dress! She took the reins and coordinated everything. Today I'm going to leave you with a teaser for what's about to come. Y'all, major shoutout to Brittany Roberts for being a smokin' model. Get it? Smoke? ;)

Hey everybody!

My favorite event of the year is tonight!  Like the Oscars but for Benfield Photography clients - my fun little cocktail party where I invite all my couples so I can celebrate them is happening in just a few hours.
I wanna give a shoutout to some vendors who stepped up to make this thing rad:
First off, Kate & Company! Elizabeth is the sweetest and is super creative and hard working. She has coordinated, designed, and planned so much of tonight.  Big BIG thanks!
The Fayetteville OPO - such a cool space! I'm excited to share it with y'all!
Jules design - Always so sweet, so funny, and so talented. Julie is a floral wizard!
Retrotender - Back for their 2nd year in a row of helping us out with the awards, they'll be mixing drinks and keeping everybody smiling.
Tom Walters - DJ - Tom has helped me the majority of these 8 years at the awards. My lifelong bestie is such a great supporter and I'm so thankful.
Eventures - they always say yes to helping and the team and selection they have are always on point.
Hillcity Popcorn - gave us the hookup for favors this year. Yummmmm!
Shelby Lynn's Cake Shoppe - always my favorite - the most talented, coolest gang on the block has helped with the Benny Awards every single year.  Such a rockstar.

I'll be sharing the winners with y'all soon, as well as some images I take tonight at the party. Stay tuned!

Benny Awards 2016: Honored and Humbled

Hey everybody!

Last night was the Benny Awards and I couldn't have been more pleased with the turnout! My favorite people in the world were there (I honestly consider my couples some of my best friends!). There was food, sweets from Shelby Lynn's Cake Shoppe, drinks from Retrotender, and music from my best buddy Tom to entertain us.  Kate & Company totally killed the design and coordination (check out the mirror down in this post that Elizabeth from K&C did!).

The Fayetteville OPO is such a rad venue!

Eventures provided these fab chairs, couches, pillows, etc.  Such a great vibe!  And Jules Design did the sweet floral centerpieces.
This chair is so fun! I sat in it for comic effect and had a ball ;)

I somehow set the precedence of feeding my friends/couples at the annual awards show... this year I hooked it up with some Green Submarine. YummMmmmmmmm!
In addition to the beautiful cake you'll see at the bottom of this post, Shelby Lynn's provided some delicious sweets to treat my guests!
A huge thanks to Hill City Popcorn for giving out these favors! Seriously Yum!
Here's that mirror I was talking about - I posted a selfie on my instagram with it.  SOOOOO cool!
Ok y'all... I have to give a huge public thank you to one of my best friends in the world, Kacey, for helping me run the show last night (and she took a lot of these pictures!).  She's a little rock star with a heart of GOLD.
Brooke and Rebecca showing off their awards! Yay!
Janelle and Brett won in multiple categories!
Oh, how I love Hope... easily one of my top five favorite people on planet Earth!  So happy she won in the best bridal category!
Jules Design and Shelby Lynn's = dream team.

Can't wait for next year! I'm introducing a new category... stay tuned! XO!

Bridal Fitness Tips (a guest post)

$

Hey everybody!

I'm handing the blog over to Benny Bride Brooke, who's crazy fit and super smart. She is sharing tips for brides as they prepare their body for the big day. Read on!

For other stories like this, get the latest Benfield Weddings Magazine!

There are so many options for working out these days and changing it up will keep your mind challenged! There are traditional gym memberships that offer wonderful classes, Yoga, Pilates, running and biking the trails, Crossfit, circuit training, kickboxing, boot camps etc. Find something that makes you sweat and find a buddy to keep you accountable! Your current fitness level and your weight loss goals will determine how early you need to start. If you are on the side of the fence with achieving high weight loss and are currently inactive then start 9 months out and go 3 times a week. Ease your body into this mobility; you won’t regret it. The rest of the week take a couple walks around your neighborhood for 30 minutes. Three to five months out add in another gym day.
For those of you wanting to tone up and trim down just a bit, I would start changing your diet first. Then 5-6 months out is when I would recommend finding a workout activity that elevates your heart rate 3 times a week. Two months out was game time for me. Elevate your heart rate 5 times a week and meal prep away!
Whatever you do, don’t get caught up in the diet pill sales pitch. These are horrible for your metabolism and will emotionally YO-YO your results on the scale of usually only water weight. Start with feeding your body healthy supplements to aid your body as you put the hard work in at the gym.
Glucosamine helps support joint health and is always a great option if you are already regular about working out or are new to it.
Do you find yourself struggling to get through a full day without stopping and feeling inexplicably tired? Or maybe you need an extra boost before you hit the gym. If so, Vitamin B12 is a great option. It helps fight fatigue by aiding the production of red blood cells. These are only a few benefits of this vitamin.
Bioton or evening primrose are wonderful supplements for hair, nail and skin support.
One week prior to the wedding, practice restraint. Try to avoid salty foods, excessive carbohydrates, and limit alcohol consumption All of these things cause your body to retain water and can result in a puffy face and bloating.
The major thing I did that visibly showed the most results was Dandelion Root Tea. This is a natural way to lose water weight and detoxify the liver. Three weeks prior, I started doing 1 tea bag twice daily. The week of the wedding, I moved to 2 tea bags twice a day. Remember with this you should still drink water throughout the day. If you dehydrate yourself too much, headaches (and bridzilla) will come along too.
What you eat during this time period is going to be more important than what effort you put forth in the gym. You should be focused on 80% diet and 20% exercise. In order to see results you need to fuel your body with the adequate nutrition. It doesn’t have to be food that taste like cardboard either! You will find yourself craving this food as your body benefits from the nutrition. Don’t think of it as a diet. I can’t stand that word because I think it automatically makes me want to quit on day 1 and eat cookies. Think of it as a healthy lifestyle. Let’s start first with the NO NOs. Stay away from processed foods, artificial sugars (i.e. Diet coke, Splenda), sodium and starchy carbs. All processed foods and a lot of fast food restaurants are high in sodium which will bloat your body. When at the grocery store think of eating things from the earth. Leafy greens, apples with almond/peanut butter, veggies, grilled chicken, avocados, egg whites, almonds, steamed/grilled veggies with salt/pepper and lemon. You can always add flavor to dishes by using things like pesto and salsa. Personally I decided to take a gluten free and mostly dairy free route and have never felt better. My complexion has never been so clear in my life. I meal prep on Sunday for the entire week. That way when I get low blood sugar and cranky I immediately have a healthy go to snack that will sustain energy levels longer. It can be as simple as always having sliced deli meat (note: actually sliced from the deli, not pre-packaged), carrots with ranch, pre-cut celery with almond butter and raisins, or grab a healthy protein shake to satisfy your cravings. Protein shakes are great for me. You can drink them right after a workout or use them as an easy, on-the-go healthy meal replacement that fuels your body. You need to look for one with at least 20g of protein, low in sugar, and watch out for the artificial sweeteners in these (i.e. aspartame).
Lastly, minimize your alcohol consumption during this time. Womp Womp. I know, I know. Alcohol puts the brakes on fat burning while it’s being metabolized by your body. It takes 48 hours for your body to digest and you don’t burn any fat for those 48 hours.
 My piece of advice:
With all the energy that goes into planning a wedding, it’s easy to lose sight of what it’s all about—give yourself gratitude for all your hard work. Love your body and be proud of all the effort you put forth. If you want a cheat meal... HAVE IT, but don’t have it 3 days a week. Putting aside the fact that you might miss your target by 5ish pounds or whatever. After all, this special day that gains so much pressure is ultimately about you and your soon-to-be husband and the covenant you are making with God….it’s just a bonus you look smokin’ in your beautiful dress.
